Workshop Offers Writers a Roadmap to Making a Living with Words

In Local News on December 26, 2025 at 11:30 am

Xenia, OH – Writers at every stage of their journey are invited to take a candid look at what it truly means to earn a living through writing during The Living Writer with Gery Deer, scheduled for Saturday, January 10, 2026, from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Xenia Community Library, 76 East Market Street.

Presented by Gery Deer, founder of GLD Communications and an award-winning journalist, copywriter and creative director, the workshop is designed to pull back the curtain on the often-misunderstood world of professional writing. Deer, who has presented versions of this workshop at writing conferences and retreats throughout the Midwest, brings decades of real-world experience to the discussion — including a career that spans journalism, marketing, ghostwriting and creative services.

“This is not a romanticized version of the writing life,” Deer said. “It’s honest, practical and, I hope, encouraging. I’ve heard some of my fellow writers say that being a writer for a living is like having homework every day for the rest of your life. I like to add — unless you love it — to that statement.”

The Living Writer offers participants a guided tour through the many paths available to today’s writers, from traditional journalism and freelance features to technical writing, corporate communications and even game storytelling. Deer emphasizes that there is no single “correct” path, but rather an opportunity for writers to identify their niche and align it with their skills, interests and background.

A key focus of the workshop is helping writers understand why businesses need writers — and how those writers can position themselves as valuable problem-solvers rather than commodity word producers. Attendees will learn how to market themselves effectively, build a professional portfolio and avoid the trap of low-paying gigs that can derail a sustainable career.

The realities of freelance life are also addressed head-on. Deer discusses project workflows, client expectations, payment timelines and how writers can set rates that reflect both their experience and the value they bring to a project. In addition, the workshop explores the growing role of artificial intelligence in writing, examining how AI can be used as a supportive tool while underscoring the importance of human creativity, judgment and voice.

Participants will leave with actionable exercises designed to strengthen their marketing writing, along with trusted resources to help launch or elevate a writing career. Deer, who authors the long-running op-ed series, “Deer In Headlines,” also shares personal insights from decades in the field, including lessons learned along the way and the perspective gained from a Pulitzer Prize nomination.

The January workshop is a condensed version of a comprehensive four-hour program that Deer offers independently each spring, making it an accessible introduction for those curious about professional writing or looking to refine their approach. Seating is limited.

Whether attendees dream of seeing their byline in print or prefer working behind the scenes helping organizations tell their stories, The Living Writer aims to provide both inspiration and strategy — and a clearer picture of how writing can move from passion to profession. Seating for this session is limited. For more information or to register, visit www.gldworkshops.com or contact Lauren at the Xenia Library at 937-352-4000 or by email at lsmallwood@gcpl.lib.oh.us.

In conjunction with International Networking Week, GLD Communications has scheduled a Referral Marketing Master Class at The Hub in the Dayton Arcade, 31 South Main Street, Dayton, OH 45402, on Wednesday, February 7th,11:30 AM until 1:00 PM. The class typically costs more than $250, but this session has been specially priced at just $40 per person.

Presented by GLD Communications’s founder and creative director, Gery Deer, the 90-minute lunch-and-learn session includes techniques for identifying and developing referral partnerships. Pre-registration is required. Seats sell out quickly. Register at gldcommunications.com.

GLD Communications Creative Director, Gery Deer, will present the class.

Deer started GLD Communications in 1997 as a part-time job. Today, it is an old-school public relations firm with media production and content distribution all under one roof. The company provides newswire stories, documentary-styled film productions, podcasting, reputation and crisis management, and copywriting services. This master class is part of the agency’s business success coaching services.

Deer said people rarely learn to turn passive networking into proactive referral partnerships. It requires strategy, time, and commitment. He also noted that most people confuse networking with referral marketing when they are symbiotic.

“People mistakenly interchange the words networking’ and referral marketing, but the two have a causal relationship,” said Deer. “This master class explains how strategic networking is just the beginning and provides the opportunity for Referral Marketing partnerships that can generate revenue for years.”

An award-winning writer and creative director, Deer has navigated many changes in his business over the years. “We have withstood recession, lagging sales, and staffing issues,” he said. “I built and maintained our public relations media agency on referrals, but it was a massive learning curve. I wish someone had a class like this back when I started.”

Deer said the course also offers insight into leveraging your current networking opportunities to identify potential referral partners. He will also cover the various networking organizations ranging from service clubs like Rotary to professional referral organizations, specifically Business Networking International (BNI). Nikki Gates, Managing Director of the Miami Valley Ohio Region of BNI, will also be in attendance to offer information on her organization’s growth in the Dayton market.

Event parking is not included but is available at Reibold Parking, 25W W. 5th St., Dayton, 45422. For more information and a direct link to register, visit www.gldcommunications.com

"Well-Fed Writer" - Peter Bowerman

“Well-Fed Writer” – Peter Bowerman

Beavercreek, OH – On Thursday, December 27th, aspiring professional writers in the Miami Valley have the opportunity to meet and learn from commercial freelancing guru Peter Bowerman, author of The Well-Fed Writer series of books.

From 5-9 PM at 4 Starters Coffee Café, 2495 Commons Blvd., in Beavercreek, Bowerman will present a two-part workshop titled, Building a Well-Fed Mini-Empire: An Evening Exploration of Lucrative Self-Publishing & “Commercial” Freelancing. Admission is $5 per person, cash only at the door and open to the public. The event is sponsored by the Western Ohio Writers Association and GLD Enterprises Commercial Writing.

In 1993, after a 15-year career in sales and marketing, Peter Bowerman turned his sights to freelance commercial writing. With no industry experience, no previous paid writing experience and no writing background, he built a commercial freelancing business in Atlanta, Georgia from fantasy to full-time in less than four months.

He has published more than 250 articles and editorials, leads seminars on writing and is a professional coach for both commercial freelancing business start-up and self-publishing endeavors. He has been continuously publishing his critically acclaimed monthly ezine for the commercial freelancing industry, The Well-Fed E-PUB, since May 2002. In 2008, he launched The Well-Fed Writer Blog, named in 2010 as a Top 50 Freelance Blog.

Beginning with the self-publishing portion of the evening, Bowerman will give an overview of the self-publishing industry, including his personal strategies for production, promotion and publicity that have yielded 70,000 copies in print of his four books.

At 7 PM, the topic will turn to the world of professional commercial freelancing. Bowerman will explain what commercial writing is, why the field makes sense now, how to build a portfolio, where the work is, what to charge, and more.

The Western Ohio Writers Association is based in Greene County and provides networking and educational opportunities to writers in southwest-central Ohio. Participants attend monthly critique sessions to hone their writing skills through peer feedback, networking opportunities and educational presentations.

“This is the second year for Mr. Bowerman’s workshop so he graciously offered to expand it to include the self-publishing session,” says Gery L. Deer, professional freelance writer, owner of GLD Enterprises Commercial Writing and director of the Western Ohio Writers Association. “Our organization is about education and enhancing the skills and opportunities available to writers in our area. Professional career support, like Mr. Bowerman’s workshop, is an important part of that mission.”

In the spirit of the holiday season, Bowerman will be offering books and other products at the event for a 25-percent discount. Those interested in attending are asked to RSVP online at www.westernohiowriters.org or by emailing gdeer@gldenterprises.net.

Beavercreek Chiropractic Clinic Hosts Professional Workshop

In Uncategorized on May 30, 2011 at 3:13 pm

BEAVERCREEK – On Friday May 20th a group of seventeen doctors of chiropractic representing nine states met at Beavercreek Chiropractic for a professional workshop. Known as the Chiropractic Golden Circle, the organization meets three times a year in what Dr. Greg Palkowski, chairman for the meeting, calls a brain trust format.

Chiropractic physicians are highly specialized in the treatment of injuries and disorders related to the musculoskeletal system but also deal with muscle strain, injuries of the extremities as well as arthritis and sinus and allergy conditions. Besides the many hours of continuing education required by state licensing bodies, the members of the Chiropractic Golden Circle stay current by sharing information.

“Our mission is to exchange ideas and help fellow members grow with the greater intention of better serving their patients and the public,” says Palkowski, director of Beavercreek Chiropractic Clinic.

During the session, each participant gives a 15 minute presentation on a wide range of topics including healthcare legislation, chiropractic philosophy and science and the latest in electronic medical record keeping. Of course, for an organization like the Circle to be successful, fellowship is as important as business success.

“The organization is as much fraternal as professional,” Palkowski says, noting the important role played by acts of interpersonal support and communication. “We want work together to achieve the highest possible level of health and personal potential and use that knowledge in caring for our patients.”

Beavercreek Chiropractic Clinic is located at 1654 Mardon Drive in Beavercreek. More information is available by calling (937) 426-9265 or visit http://www.beavercreekchiro.com.
