As the last shovel full of bricks was removed from the site of the old Powers Marine building after its demolition, residents have been staring at yet another vacant lot in the downtown and wondering about Jamestown’s future. Founded on the southeastern edge of Greene Countyin 1816, the tiny village has seen its share of catastrophe.

In the late 1890’s, a devastating tornado leveled the entire town while a century later a fire destroyed most of the southwest side of W. Washington Street. But today, Jamestown may face a greater challenge than natural disasters – short shortsightedness.

What would have happened at the turn of the 20th Century if no one had decided to rebuild after the tornado? Within a few moments, homes and businesses lay in splintered wreckage; a town once poised to compete with Xenia for the county seat lay in ruins. Imagine if it had been left that way. That’s essentially what has been happening in Jamestown for the last couple of decades, with a few exceptions, particularly one structure that was snatched from in front of the bulldozers nearly in the nick of time.

Once again alive with the sounds of ongoing renovation efforts and music and laughter filling its auditorium, in the mid 1990’s the Jamestown Opera House was considered an eyesore and there were those who believed it should be torn down. Fortunately, thanks to the determination of a small number of residents who formed the Jamestown Area Historical Society, the historic theatre is without question a shining gemstone in the village’s tarnished crown.

Then again, if things keep going like they are it might be the only downtown building still standing and occupied ten years from now. How’s that for irony? But it’s not just lost history that is costing Jamestown, but the perception that it’s decaying – rapidly.

An informal survey posted on Facebook revealed some opinions as to why Jamestown has declined. Some people suggested that the village and township officials make it too difficult to establish new business, often rejecting proposals for new business and creating so many roadblocks that there would be no reward for the effort.

One comment said that rents of office and store front space in Jamestown cost between $1,500 and $2,000 per month. If true, one of the problems is obvious. With such outrageous expense just to keep the space, limited street side parking, nothing to draw people to town and an ever expanding sprawl away from the downtown area, there is no practical reason to set up shop there.

Another line of discussion from the survey suggested that Shawnee Hills should be annexed for tax revenue because there are higher property values and income levels than those found in the village proper. The extra money could be used to provide incentives for businesses to settle in town, thus drawing more visitors. Needless to say that drew angry responses from lake dwellers, some of whom commented that they don’t consider themselves as Jamestown residents, but merely living within the same postal district.

Of Course, real estate and financial issues are only part of the problem. People still create the biggest roadblock to regenerating a town’s vitality, regardless of its size. Those who hold the power in small towns still seem to believe that they are all-important.

Good old boy politics thrives and for those who have never been exposed to any other way of doing things, their ability to make forward-thinking decisions may be sharply limited. In addition, pointless and continual bickering between township and village officials over petty control issues only serves to drive the coffin nails deeper.

Trying to return Jamestown to the way it was is hopeless. Those days are gone and though this opinion probably won’t sit well with the powers that be, a new era for Jamestown means more creative thinking, some genuine business savvy and a fresh start. Jamestown may not be able to compete with larger communities, but more open minds must soon prevail or it will just end up a dot on a map and a footnote in the history of Greene County.

Jamestown Variety Show Finishes With Standing Ovation

JAMESTOWN– The Jamestown Opera House came alive with laughter and standing ovations Saturday evening, March 10th, during The Brothers & Co. Variety Show. The “Boys In Black,” as the group is known to fans, took the stage for a two hour, music and variety performance to help raise money towards the continued renovation of the 123-year-old facility.

After a brief introduction and prayer by historical society representative, and formerJamestownmayor, Mark Ferrell, the western-clad quartet of country crooners opened with “Daddy Sang Bass.” Music continued through the show with covers by Ricky Nelson, John Denver, The Statler Brothers and a special version of George Jones’ hit, “He Stopped Loving Her Today.”

Acoustic artist Ed Jones received two, house-shaking rounds of applause for his guitar picking talents during the group’s rendition of “Rocky Top,” and singer, drummer Gary Deer Jr., ofJamestown, delivered a stirring version of the country hit, “Jukebox in My Mind.”

Inspiring four-part harmonies were not the only entertainment on the program, however. Singer, bass player Jim Karns, ofFairborn,Ohio, is also the variety troupe’s comic magician. “The Professor,” as he is known in the group, worked his magic on a number of laugh-loaded feats of prestidigitation including a hilarious magical mystery involving a hapless white pigeon, an innocent Coke bottle, and a lot of feathers.

Not to be out done, the band’s pianist and tenor singer, Gery Deer, ofJamestown, made some magic of his own with a Wild West-styled comedy bullwhip routine. From a crisp newspaper cut to supersonic candle snuffing, the crowd was treated to a type of entertainment almost lost on theatrical stages today.

Following their energetic finale performance of “Blue Moon,” they received a standing ovation, cheers and whistles from the entire crowd. Organizers have asked them to return toJamestown’s stage next year. This is was the second performance by The Brothers & Co., sponsored by Culligan of Dayton, The Portrait Gallery inJamestown, Computer Troubleshooters inBeavercreek, 91.3 WYSO Radio, Yellow Springs and the Jamestown Area Historical Society.

Bullwhip Lessons Offer Unique Valentine’s Day Gift

Each year, individuals, couples and even entire families come to The Whip Artistry Studio to learn the whip for fun and sport. Most are hobbyists who are just interested in learning a unique skill. Others are professional performers and stage entertainers who want to add the whip to their repertoire.

Couple’s bullwhip lessons starts with a quick safety overview and covers the basics of whip artistry. Contrary to what one might think, the couple does not crack the whip at each other nor is it used in any dangerous manner. Instead the couple shares a unique experience and learns a new skill together.

Gery L. Deer, an independent writer and nationally-known whip artistry performer and instructor, is the studio’s managing director. “Whips have been around in some form for thousands of years,” says Deer. “They are a fun, precision tool for sport and entertainment and a great activity for couples and families to share; akin to archery, fencing and target shooting.”

Lois Deer, of Jamestown, dies after long fight with Alzheimer’s disease.

Lois Jean (Sutton) Deer, 78, of 1809 Mt. Carmel Rd., Jamestown, passed away quietly on Friday, November 11, from complications related to Alzheimer’s disease.

Lois was born in Kitts Hill, Ohio, near the city of Ironton, to John and Jennie Sutton on September 13, 1933 and raised in Kitts Hill with siblings, Vernon, William, Lyndal, Ruth, Isabel, Gary, and Regina. She married Gary Lee Deer, of Hanging Rock, Ohio, in December of 1951 and raised three children, Gary, Jr., Cathy Jean (Wolf), and Gery, all of whom now reside with their respective spouses, Diana, Robert and Barbara, nearby the family farm in Jamestown.

Lois is survived by her husband and children along with 5 grandchildren, Melissa Van Oss, Jessica (Deer) Simmons, Jodi (Van Oss) Pearce, and Tiffany (Wolf) Knapp, Henry Dill, and three great grand children, Emma, Jonah and Eryn. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews, her sister, Regina (Sutton) Marshal, of Riverside, and her sister-in-law, Phyllis (Loper) Sutton, of Ironton.

Over the years Lois and her family lived in Dayton, Fairborn and finally Jamestown, settling there in 1977 where she worked for many years at Curley’s Fine Foods restaurant. Her time was mostly spent raising her children and grandchildren, quilting, gardening and working the family farm and business with Gary.

During the 1990’s, Lois and her family designed and built award-winning parade floats featuring historical scenes from the Jamestown region. Lois was a lifetime member of the Jamestown Area Historical Society and did a great deal to help the early stages of restoration for the Jamestown Opera House.

For the last two years, Lois was cared for at home by her family. Her husband and children express their heartfelt gratitude to niece and cousin, Pamela (Sutton) Suske, who selflessly took on the role of primary caregiver. Her tireless support and personal sacrifices could never be repaid and gave Lois the highest quality of life possible during her long illness.

Services are to be held at Jamestown Presbyterian Church, 61 W Washington St., with visitation 5pm until 8pm, Monday, November 14 and funeral 11:30am, Tuesday, November 15. Graveside services will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Hussey Rd. in Jefferson Township, just west of Bowersville. In lieu of flowers, the Deer family requests donations in Lois’s name to be made to local Alzheimer’s and dementia advocacy organizations. Cards and letters may be sent c/o Gary Deer 1809 Mt. Jamestown Serves Up Fun And Beans This Weekend

That is, if the street paving is done.

Downtown Jamestown comes to life this weekend for the annual Jamestown Lions Club Bean Festival.  the festival kicks off at 5PM, Friday September 16 and continue through Saturday night, September 17th.  A parade, beginning south of town off of Waynesville-Jamestown Rd. will begin at 6PM and travel east on W. Washington St. (US 35).

The festival includes vendors of all kinds, kiddie rides, games, bean soup and corn bread, local bands, pancake breakfast, car show, ham and blanket game, $2,500 raffle, bingo and more.  In addition, the newly refurbished Jamestown Opera House will be open for tours throughout the weekend.

Planning and preparations continue though the small town has been undergoing major road repairs. For several weeks, most of  North and South Limestone Streets (St. Rt. 72) have been excavated making travel hazardous, even to the town post office. The festival is centered at the intersections of SR 72 and US 35 in the middle of town.

 

 

 

There Is Life After Bullying

dih-logo-SEA recent survey indicated that 77 percent of elementary and middle school students reported that they had been the victims of a bully at some time. The information also revealed that more than half of bullying incidents go unreported.

The recent suicides of several teens that had been tortured by bullies because of their sexuality have prompted a flood of media attention to the problem. I am concerned, however, that the public and the media are forgetting about other groups who have always been the targets of bullying including those with physical and mental disabilities, the impoverished and various ethnicities. I can relate to these issues – I know how they feel.

I was born with a serious congenital birth defect that had me in and out of the hospital for the first 20 years of my life. A multitude of medical issues combined with just being physically smaller than other kids my age made me the perfect target for bullies.

Oddly, none of my health problems were openly visible to anyone around me. Virtually everything people knew about me was total conjecture and inaccurate rumors with no factual basis. Unfortunately, facts and reason rarely work with people who are terrified of anyone who is different – whether the differences are obvious or not.

As if I didn’t have enough to contend with at the hospital, at school I was pushed, called names, kicked, hit, had my book bags ransacked, my lockers vandalized and my musical instruments thrown around on the school bus – all to the complete oblivion of school officials. In fact, some stood right there while it all happened, literally choosing to ignore it.

While the majority of the adults around me were supportive and helpful, there were a few who were downright cruel. Teachers, coaches and bus drivers are in a unique position to bully under the guise of maintaining order and discipline. *Despite what the party line might be, each teacher or administrator has his or her favorites – athletes, star students, and so on – who will always get preferential treatment. After all, these adults want (and desperately need due to a horribly low level of self esteem) to be liked by the students as much as the other kids.

A perfect example of this kind of ignorance came in my sixth grade year. I was out of school with a simple case of chicken pox. Noting my absence during roll call, the teacher told the rest of the class they shouldn’t get too attached to me because I had a serious disease and wouldn’t live to see my 15th birthday. With that thoroughly incorrect announcement, the rumors went viral.

So why don’t parents get more involved? Most of the time, parents have no idea what is going on. I never talked about it much. I doubt my parents ever knew how bad it really was.

In the end, I won. Eventually, I realized that it wasn’t my fault that people couldn’t deal with me. At the ripe old age of 43, my health is good, I’m a successful writer and entrepreneur and, despite my sixth grade teacher’s prediction, I am still here.

I carry no anger or malice towards the kids who spent so much of their time trying to better themselves by humiliating me. Oddly enough, a couple of them have already preceded me in death. As for those who are still with us, I actually feel sorry for them and genuinely hope they grew up to succeed in life. The adults, on the other hand, were the true villains.

It was nearly impossible to keep my personal issues private in a tiny farm town where everyone gossiped about things they didn’t even understand. I can’t imagine what kids today are going through as every detail of their lives are posted online for all to see – especially those struggling with personal identity issues.

Sadly, bullies are not just in school and, as I pointed out, adults can be just as bad as kids. A bully can be someone who abuses or oversteps her authority as a supervisor at work, a civic official or a teacher who ignores the academic struggles of a student in class because he or she is not one of the star athletes. Bullies are everywhere but you don’t have to take their abuse.

If you have been the victim of a bully, try to forgive them. They are small, sad and hopeless people who have nothing but pain inside. Forget trying to reason with them, it never works.

Whatever you do, don’t lower yourself to their level. Walk away. Turn off the computer. Seek out help and surround yourself with people who care and who will support you. None of these pathetically insecure people is worth your dignity … or your life.

 

Welcome to The NEW Jamestown Comet

Prototype web-based publication is a spinoff of its own history.

In 1876, just past the time of the town crier and way before MTV, Jamestown, Ohio residents were introduced to The Jamestown Journal, a four-page weekly newspaper printed by William S. Galvin, editor and publisher. The newspaper offered readers everything from local news to train schedules.

Galvin later changed the name of the paper to The Jamestown Comet, with the first verifiable issue featuring the updated masthead printed in July of 1890. The circulation of each of the paper was about 1,025 with an annual subscription cost of $1.50, in advance.

 Printed with the news were advertisements for everything from miracle tonics to glassware and from livery service (not limousines but horse boarding) to a performance of the Century Theater at the opera house. Though traveling entertainment graced the stage of opera houses in most towns, the Century Theater was the resident theater company in Jamestown and often posted advertisements for each show and parades that were held just before a performance.

 Keep in mind that one of the jobs of the Fourth Estate has always separate what seems important from what is and deliver that information to the public as quickly and clearly as possible. But what seems important in one era could seem somewhat silly later in time. Here is one of the actual news items exactly as it appeared in the Friday August 1, 1890 edition of The Jamestown Comet.

 NEW JASPER – Mr. William Lewis Levalley was thrown from a load of oats Monday and received severe injuries in the arm and limb and was also badly cut and bruised about the head. Dr. Cunningham reports him in bad condition.”

  Whatever the information, it was valuable to the people of the time, just as it is important to people today to have the latest update of the next rehab-stricken reality show star. Then again, I might like to see a good story about a guy thrown from a load of oats – it would be more interesting and less predictable.

 It is important to note also that there were no photos in The Jamestown Comet, nor most other papers of the time. Plates required to reproduce tin type photos or hand sketches were expensive and time-consuming. Local newspapers could simply not afford the equipment nor did they have the expertise to provide this kind of luxury. Editors and writers had to depend on their words to create the picture for the reader.

As larger newspapers such as the Xenia Daily Gazette and the Dayton Journal-Herald took a larger portion of the market, the days of the Comet were numbered. In 1899, Galvin sold the newspaper to the Press Publishing Company which changed the overall look of the publication and renamed it Greene County Press. The paper continued to be published until 1955 when it finally closed.

 Over all, a 79-year run for a newspaper is nothing to sneeze at, but all media has a shelf life. Today, as newspapers around the country plan more layoffs and cut back on circulation in an effort to stay afloat, it should be noted that newspapers are not dying, they are just changing. The big issue is whether or not publishers are willing to change with the times.

When the  Dayton Journal-Herald, a conservative morning paper, merged with its liberal afternoon competitor, the Dayton Daily News, in 1987 many readers were outraged. The merger came from necessity since there was simply not enough of a market in the Miami Valley for two mammoth newspapers. The choice in the changing economy was to merge, or both could go under. The decision seems to have been correct.

Twenty years later, publishers who find themselves in yet another economic transformation but are unwilling to change with the times might find themselves selling off their publications or closing them permanently. However, the solution is not as simple as making a move to an all-digital newspaper. There must be a way to make any news publication profitable amidst the flurry of instant news provided by behemoths like CNN.

Quality content is paramount and smaller publications are focusing on more locally-based content and providers and free access to the online version. Whatever the solution, the changes in the newspaper business are going to continue for some time.

Jamestown Native’s 30 Years In Dodger Blue

The Los Angeles Dodgers’ Fred Claire left Jamestown, Ohio as a young man, but remembers his roots in his memoire.

LOS ANGELES – If there was ever any doubt as to whether or not small town life can affect a person long after they had grown up and moved away, the inspiring story of one Jamestown native might eliminate it once and for all. Fred Claire is a testament to those values put to trial in the wilderness of big city life as he rose from being a sports writer to an executive for the Los Angeles Dodgers in sunny California.

 A shop keeper’s son starting out at the tail-end of the Great Depression, Fred Claire was born on October 5, 1935 in Jamestown, Ohio. His mother, Mary Frances Harper, was born and raised in Jamestown where her father operated Harper’s Drug Store.

 Ironically, given the town’s modern history, his grandfather’s store was eventually destroyed by fire. Claire’s father, Marston, later opened another drug store on the opposite corner of the village. “My Dad’s drug store was simply known as Claire’s Corner Drug Store,” Claire said.

 As a young boy, he lived in the apartment above the store with his parents, his brother Doug and one sister named Lynn. With his family, Claire enjoyed fishing trips to Canada and nearby Indian Lake and began his business career as a young entrepreneur. “My brother and I trapped muskrats,” Claire recalled. “And I had a newspaper route delivering the Xenia Daily Gazette.” As it turned out, newspapers would be an important part of his life over the years.

 Claire suggested that his passion for sports came from early summer mornings in Jamestown when friends would throw pebbles at his second-floor apartment window. This was, according to Claire, “the indication that it was time to get up, get the baseball equipment and head out to the diamond at Silvercreek School.” He was referring to the historic school at the corner of SR 72 and South Charleston road in Jamestown which currently serves as the Greeneview primary building.

 In 1950 Martson and Mary moved their family to Torrance, California, a suburb of Los Angeles. Claire graduated from Torrance High School, and then went on to attend numerous colleges before obtaining his bachelor’s degree in journalism.

 Throughout the late 1950s and 1960’s, Claire worked for a number of local newspapers in and around the Los Angeles area, mostly as a sports editor. In 1969, he went to work for the Los Angeles Dodgers climbing the ladder from publicity director all the way up to executive vice president and general manager in charge of player personnel.

 Many people growing up in a rural community have hopes and dreams of making it big and leaving small town life behind forever. Claire, however, took his hometown along for the ride, if only in his heart.

 “Even though I left Jamestown at the age of 14, my experiences there have been the foundation of my life,” Claire recalled. “I was blessed to be raised by wonderful parents and to be a part of a strong family. My work ethic, my love of sports and my sense of being a part of a family and a community all were established by my time and experiences in Jamestown.”

 Over the course of his career, Claire got to know some of the greats of baseball. From Tommy Lasorda to Reggie Jackson, he knew some of the best, and worst, in the business. “There is a baseball resting in a place of honor in the office of my Pasadena home,” Claire wrote. “One single baseball representing enough memories to last a lifetime.”

 The baseball was given to Claire by Dodgers player Rick Dempsey moments after the team had clinched the 1988 World Series against the A’s. He was one of three who received the World Series trophy along with Tommy Lasorda and team owner Peter O’Malley and he never forgot what it took to get there. “It was the result of an amazing amount of work by an organization that bounded back after finishing 16 games under .500 in each of the two previous seasons,” Claire noted.

 Fred Claire spent his last twelve years of his career with the Dodgers as the club’s general manager, taking over for Al Campanis in April of 1987. He was fired, as many people are when new management takes over, on June 21, 1998 – the same day that his good friend Campanis passed away. “It was a strange feeling after being a part of the organization for 30 years,” Claire recalled. “But one overshadowed by the passing of a great friend.”

 In March of 2004, Sports Publishing, LLC published (START ITALICS) Fred Claire: My 30 Years in Dodger Blue (END ITALICS) (ISBN 1-58261-732-5), a book about Claire’s long and distinguished career. He co-authored the book with Steve Springer of the Los Angeles Times and discusses his life in the business of baseball beginning with his life as a boy in rural Greene County, Ohio.

 The book has been recognized on the Los Angeles Times’ Bestsellers list. Of course Claire’s work is in no way finished. In addition to writing about his career, he also works to help a new generation achieve their goals in sports and business.

 “I have attempted to use my Jamestown and professional experiences to guide young people who are interested in the business world of sports,” Claire said. “I have taught at the Annenberg School at the University of Southern California, served on the advisory boards of the USC Sports Business Institute, the USC Student Sports Business Association and the Long Beach State Sports Management Advisory program.”

 Fred Claire has three grown children of his own, daughters Jennifer and Kim and son Jeff. Today, he lives in Pasadena, California with his wife Sheryl and keeps tabs on his home town, staying in contact with a few old friends from his boyhood community.

 On a personal note:

In February of 2009, I received an email from Fred Claire. He had found my work online and wrote to connect with a fellow writer from his hometown. After a few correspondences, Mr. Claire sent me a copy of his autobiography. On the inside cover he wrote, “To Gery – Thanks for keeping Jamestown in the news.” My thanks to Mr. Claire and we hope he comes back home for a visit sometime soon.
