Community STE[A]M Academy Hosting “Very Merry Open House” Dec. 18

In Local News on December 9, 2025 at 1:36 pm

Xenia, Ohio – The holiday season is getting a cheerful kickstart at the Community STE[A]M Academy, where families are invited to a “Very Merry Open House” on Wednesday, Dec. 18, from 5 to 7 p.m. at 855 Lower Bellbrook Rd. in Xenia.

The school promises a relaxed, family-friendly evening—complete with holiday fun and a special appearance from the big guy himself. Santa will be on hand to hear Christmas wishes and spread plenty of festive spirit.

But the event isn’t just about holiday magic. It’s also a chance for prospective families to get a closer look at what makes the Community STE[A]M Academy unique. Visitors can tour the building, chat with teachers and staff, and learn more about the school’s hands-on, project-based approach.

If you’re wondering about that extra “A” in STE[A]M, the academy is happy to explain. While STEM focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, STEAM adds the Arts into the mix—recognizing creativity, design thinking, and expression as essential parts of problem-solving. At the Community STE[A]M Academy, students use both technical skills and artistic thinking to explore and innovate, whether they’re studying robotics, environmental science, or digital design.

That blend of creativity and science will be on display during the open house, as middle and high school students present their latest sustainability projects. Guests can also roll up their sleeves for some hands-on holiday fun, including cookie decorating and watercolor card making—starting with making the paint from scratch.

School leaders say the evening is meant to be fun, festive, and informative. Whether you’re exploring enrollment or just want to enjoy a little holiday cheer, everyone is welcome.

“It’s a night you won’t want to miss,” organizers said. “Bring the family, join the fun, and see what makes our STE[A]M community so special.” For more information, contact Kim Haines, Communications Coordinator at 937-800-2720.

XENIA — The Greene County FISH Pantry hosted the Xenia Area Chamber of Commerce after-hours event Wednesday.

The monthly networking program offered participants an opportunity to learn more about the food pantry’s mission and meet Mike Reeves, the new executive Director and operations manager.

After-Hours visitors were given tours of the pantry facility and its newest addition, a food storage warehouse they call “the barn.”

Each month, the Xenia Area Chamber of Commerce presents the event at different member locations throughout the city. The after-hours event allows other chamber members, residents, and civic leaders to learn more about the host organization and their contributions to the region.

Xenia Area Chamber of Commerce President Donna Saraga opened the event by introducing Reeves and sharing why they chose to have the event at the pantry.

“We know many people have never been in the building or haven’t been for a long time, and we thought it was a great opportunity to learn more about the facility and meet Mike,” Saraga said.

Discussion topics included the continuing need for food security in Greene County through food and monetary contributions from residents and businesses. Members of the board of directors and the executive director provided guests with tours of the facility, including the newly constructed food storage warehouse, recently named in honor of the previous executive director of the pantry, Gail Matson.

Reeves provided some history about the pantry and the facility, then spoke of the people involved with the organization such as their clients and volunteers.

“It absolutely warms your heart to see these people, and the volunteers are what makes this place work,” Reeves said. “I really appreciate everyone coming to see the building and learn more about what we do, and thanks to Donna and the Xenia Chamber for having this here today.”

He also noted that the pantry serves more than 100 clients during each day’s distribution, up to 90 on those days reserved for veterans and active military service families. More information on the Greene County FISH Pantry is available online at http://www. gcfp.org.

The next Xenia Area Chamber of Commerce After Hours will be on June 11, hosted at Toward Independence in Xenia.

TCN Behavioral Health Announces Opening of Hope House

In Local News on June 13, 2022 at 9:25 am

Troy, Ohio –  June 13, 2022 –  TCN Behavioral Health Services, Inc. announces the opening of Hope House, a place where adults struggling with opiate or stimulant use disorder can stay as they begin recovery.

Hope House is a Social Detox Program that is an important part of TCN’s continuum of substance use care. It creates a safe environment staffed by medical professionals and social detox technicians who offer support and comfort to guide residents through the acute stages of opioid and stimulant withdrawal. Prior to being considered for admission to the Hope House, a client will have completed a full assessment at TCN or another certified provider.

In many cases, a client will begin Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) while at Hope House. “If a person has substance use disorder and is trying to stop and remain abstinent, Medication Assisted Treatment is available for acute withdrawal as well as for the maintenance phase to decrease cravings and help resist the temptation to use,” says Dr. Esam Alkhawaga, Chief Medical Officer at TCN. “MAT uses FDA-approved medications for the withdrawal management of substance use disorder that are safer for the clients, promote recovery and reduce the potential for overdose.”

MAT is administered by a team of professionals including doctors, nurse practitioners, physician’s assistants, nurses, substance use therapists, social detox technicians and peer support specialists.

A typical stay at Hope House is 7-14 days, during which residents live on the premises and commit to following individualized treatment recommendations. Upon discharge, Hope House residents are transported to TCN’s Troy campus located at 1059 North Market Street. Here they work with a counselor to set up the next steps of their recovery plan, which may include a stepped-down level of residential treatment or transitional housing, group or individual therapy, MAT, and community support. TCN currently operates Christopher House, a residential treatment program located in Greene County, and 8 gender-specific recovery houses in Greene, Montgomery, Miami and Logan counties.

Founded in 1990, TCN Behavioral Health Services, Inc. is a comprehensive behavioral health agency dedicated to improving lives by providing clinically excellent and accessible behavioral health services.  TCN provides mental health, substance use and psychiatric services for adults and youth in Miami, Greene, Montgomery, Logan and Champaign counties.  For more information or to donate to TCN call (937)376-8700 or visit www.tcn.org.
